CLIMBING ON THE GREEN BUS

Paul Wellstone’s son said of his father that whenever the going was the toughest his father was there to help. That was the measure of the man. That was the courage of the Senator. That was the essence of his spirit. That was the power of his legacy – a call to his party and his country to come home. And that was where his Green Bus was headed, to bring America home.

Home to an America that no longer sees greed and calls it greatness, Home to an America where country bumpkins tend the crops and operate the machines and build the houses and drive the buses. Home to an America where retirement dreams do not evaporate in a mist of stock options and insider trading to turn into a jobs greeting customers at the local Wal-Mart or clearing the tables at McDonalds. Home to an America where a person’s worth is not measured by the size of his wallet but by the size of his heart. That is where the Green Bus is bound.

The President likes to tell the world, you’re either for us or you’re against us. Well, he is right. We are the men and women who have stood in the fields watching the crops and our dreams wither for the lack of rain. You are either for us or against us. We are the men and women who have watched the machines grow idle and the factories close. You are either for us or against us. We are the men and women who must choose daily between life saving medicine and a life giving diet. You are either for us or against us.

We are the men and women who counted on America to keep faith with us and provide the foundation upon which we could build a secure retirement. You are either on our side or you are on the other side. You are either on the Green Bus or you are standing by the wayside.

Paul Wellstone was a man who stood by our side; no matter what the cost he had to pay; no matter how tough the going got. He was there and he still is. Wherever there is despair he will be there with a message of hope. Wherever America strays into the wilderness he will be there with a compass to guide her home again. Wherever a child is left behind Paul Wellstone’s Green Bus will be there to bring the child home to America’s greatness.

If you would honor Paul Wellstone then climb on the Green Bus. If you would remember Paul Wellstone then climb on the Green Bus. We have to take the Green Bus down every highway and street in every city and county in every state in the nation. We have to take the Green Bus every day from now until election day 2004. The Green Bus must run from Key West to Point Barrow, from Maine to Mexico and from Hawaii to the Virgin Islands. When the Democratic Party comes home so will America.
