SIEGE OF AMERICA - DAY 249 |
| It is Day 249 of the Siege of America and Osama Bin Laden is still on the loose. We haven't "smoked him out"; "run him down"; or brought him in. What is more we are now told that the network he built is still active, still sending his orders around the world and still implementing plans to attack America. Operation (INSERT THIS WEEK"S NAME) hasn't seemed to have achieved anything much except a few caches of obsolete munitions left over from the CIA sponsored Afghani-Soviet war. We are no closer to bringing Bin Laden to justice than we were on September 11, 2001. On Day 249 of the Siege of America we read that the Al Queda network is buzzing with plans to launch a new attack that will result in "massive" US casualties. Like last May and June the indications are non-specific and don't designate either the target or the techniques that Al Queda is planning. But, Tom Ridge tells us, the Administration is closer to being able to connect the dots. http://www.nytimes.com/2002/05/19/national/19THRE.html That is all well and good, but despite Ms. Rice's protestations to the contrary, it now seems that it really wasn't a connect the dots puzzle - except in the White House Situation Room and at the Crawford ranch. It wasn't even a jigsaw puzzle. It was a paint-by-numbers picture with a photo of the finished product on the box. Since the 1993 WTC bombing and the embassy bombings - where we DID smoke 'em out; run 'em down; and bring 'em to justice, incidentally - the FBI and CIA accumulated a clear picture of the Al Queda plan to use aircraft as missiles against US government buildings. After 1993 how could anyone not consider that the World Trade Center was indeed a target. http://www.nytimes.com/2002/05/18/politics/18FLIG.html On Day 249 of the Siege of America the Administration's stable of talking heads is preparing to make the rounds of the Sunday morning talk shows and Fox News deriding the Democrats for a lack of patriotism when they dare to ask, "Couldn't anyone in this Administration pick up a brush and follow the numbers on the canvas? |
