Memories of Dad

Dad and the fireplace

Dad liked Fireplaces. If he couldn't put them in the house he built them in the garage.

In Kentucky, they lived way back in the foothills along Blood River. Dad built a big garage with a fireplace. Our brother had his room out in a building a little ways from the main house. One day Mom came across a controlled substance in Steve's room. It was not just a little bit of either.

Mom put it in the fireplace and burned it all. Stephen was not a happy camper at that point. Mom told him that the day he had to make money that way was the day she would wish he had never been born. Stephen got over his anger when the police showed up a few hours later and searched his cabin - and found nothing!

A "friend" had told them about Steve in order to get a plea bargain on his own arrest. Mom said Stephen stood behind the police office and mouthed, "Thank you, Mom" - which was not what he had been saying a little earlier!

We told Mom it was a good thing they lived in the boondocks or they would have been the mellowest neighborhood in Kentucky.
